See Jonathan’s LinkedIn profile Jonathan loves how an open source operating system can transform a hunk of metal and plastic into something infinitely useful. He started fixing problems on a 16MHz 286 before he was 10, and has had a knack for computers ever since. When he was a teenager in rural Virginia, he got a job at a small local ISP, where he started poking around on the Linux server in the corner. He quickly developed a fascination for open-source operating systems, and decided to pursue an undergraduate degree in Computer Science. One of the things Jonathan loves about his work is that if he is doing his job right, no one will ever know he is there: everything will just work perfectly and smoothly. His clients will be free to do what they do best without having to worry about their servers, or even fully understand how they work. He loves being able to provide that kind of peace of mind for his clients, and loves watching them be productive thanks to his efforts. Jonathan enjoys having a friendly and personable relationship with his clients: he wants them to feel free to ask him all sorts of questions, and he is great at explaining technical concepts to non-technical people. Jonathan likes the fact that thanks to open source software and the power of modern computing, even a small business on a tight budget can achieve some really amazing things that several years ago would have only been possible with a huge budget. Servers are becoming a bigger and more necessary part of absolutely every aspect of life and business, and he likes being behind the scenes and making them work. | Morgan thinks the internet is a fascinating place, and is proud to contribute a few bytes to the giant organism that it has become. She started web design in her college days as a project just for fun, and quickly found endless uses for her new skills. Her academic background is in the humanities, and the museums and universities where she held her first jobs were thrilled to have an English and history expert who could also code websites. Her web skills were soon in greater demand than her humanities skills, and her ability to work well with clients has been greatly enhanced by the teaching and writing skills she learned in her role as a humanist. Now, she devotes herself to web design. Morgan has two major concerns as a web designer: the first is a positive customer service experience for the client. Almost all of her clients have had a horrible experience with a web developer in the past, where the project has been overdue and over-budget. Morgan hopes to buck that trend by communicating well with her clients every step of the way. Her second major concern is for the long-term health of her clients’ websites: she wants to make sure that her clients can continue to update and maintain their sites on their own, without relying on services of a web designer. She usually develops her sites in WordPress: it has a wonderful user interface, and is easy for even technophobes to learn and use. Morgan’s favorite challenge as a web developer is to take a design created by someone else and turn it into tidy code. Taking an image and recreating it in code is immensely satisfying. As someone with an academic background, she also loves how the web world is constantly changing and evolving: there are always new and exciting things to learn, and no end to the knowledge that will help her and her clients create the most visually pleasing and functional websites possible. |
